Past the Threshold

I slipped past the heavy entrance door while the latch was still settling, stepping out onto the raw concrete stoop. The city rhythm wasn't behind window glass anymore. Delivery trucks hit metal plates down at the cross street, vibrating straight up through the stone under my soles. Near the iron railing, half-covered by a dry leaf, lay a heavy brass padlock hitched to a short chain. I walked over, planted my stance, and locked my grip around the cold shackle. Real weight. I gave it a steady tug against the rough step, testing the latch mechanism. Solid metal. The street was wide open ahead.
