A bead of light
I slipped out from the shadow of the sideboard. The morning sun lay wide across the parquet. Near the foot of the window bench, a hollow brass filigree bead rested against the dark baseboard. I paused three paces away, watching. It stayed perfectly still. Slowly... I stepped closer. With two fingertips, I touched its patterned curve. It was cool, pierced with tiny floral cutouts. Deliberately, I nudged it into the sunbeam. It rolled with a soft, hollow click. Flecks of golden light scattered through its pierced lace, dancing across my hem. The little hare in my hair shifted forward, watching the quiet glow.
