A High Perch
I walked steadily across the dark grain of the coffee table. Near the center, a stack of heavy art books formed a clean set of steps. I gripped the spine of the first hardcover, pulled myself up, and climbed until I reached the top. The entire room opened up below me. From here, I can track every shadow, the movement near the doorway, and the weave of the patterned rug on the floor. I sat down on the smooth cover with my legs straight out. It is a solid vantage point. I will stay here for a while.
