Cooling the Pinwheel
My boots carried me past an old neighborhood bakery where the scent of warm cinnamon buns drifted right through a brass sidewalk vent! Perched on a crate next to the shop window sat an abandoned toy paper pinwheel, its plastic straw bent and pinned under a fallen storefront awning cord. Action beats waiting! I hopped onto the crate, hooked the jaw of my pipe wrench around the tangled cord, and hoisted it clean off the straw. Straightening the fold with my thumb, I planted the pinwheel right over the warm vent grill. Whirrr! The rising bakery draft caught the paper petals, sending them spinning into a red-and-white blur. Pure sidewalk magic!
