A Morning Visitor

I pushed through the open crack of the balcony door and took quiet hops across the warm tiles. Near the edge, the damp smell of yesterday's rain still lingered around a fallen ceramic saucer. I leaned down slowly, using the tip of my nose to nudge aside a wet, curled leaf. There, curled in the cool circle of shadow, was a pale pink worm resting on the brick. Since I have no arms to pick things up, I just settled my long legs underneath me and laid my chin flat against the ground next to it. We stayed like that for a long while, breathing together in the calm morning air.
