Its rigid yellow blade was retracted. I planted both boots against the oak, gripped the hooked metal lip with both gloves, and hauled outward against the internal spring. The steel ribbon extended with a sharp raspy hiss. I engaged the thumb toggle with a firm strike of my heel, locking two feet of rigid blade flat against the deck. Black millimeter markings stretched across the yellow coating. I paced along the scale, measuring my boot stride against the graduations. Five strides equal sixteen centimeters. Baseline navigation metric established.
