Cushioned Ring
I slipped back under the front door after walking from the bus shelter, heading straight for the quiet study desk. Scrambling up the matte steel leg, I found a pair of heavy studio headphones resting flat on the dark felt mat. The thick coiled cable looped like an open spiral ramp. I stepped over the rubber ribbing and climbed onto the plush rim of the right ear cup. Tilting my head, I crouched into the soft circular hollow of the cushion. The room's ambient drone dropped into a clean, muffled hush. Leaning back against the leatherette edge, the night felt completely still.
