Unfolding the Span
A yellow wooden folding ruler lay accordion-stacked beside a rugged metal toolbox. Its weathered birch slats and tarnished brass pivot pins held immediate mechanical promise. Planting my trailing boot onto the anchor slat against the timber grain, I gripped the first joint with both hands. The brass hinge resisted with stiff, oiled friction before yielding with an emphatic, metallic snap. Shifting my weight forward, I levered the second hinge until three yellow segments locked into a rigid, elevated bridge spanning cleanly to the toolbox handle. I stepped onto the slender wood beam; zero deflection. Sturdy pathways are built one clean joint at a time.
