Tumble Down the Steps
I slipped through the cracked storm door and out onto the rough concrete of the front porch. Near the edge of the top step, a stout, prickly pinecone blocked the descent. I froze instantly, lowering my snout to inspect the rigid wooden scales. When it stayed completely still, I moved in with deliberate steps and planted my shoulder against its flank. With one sharp, heavy shove, I launched it over the brink. It bounced down the steps with three hollow clatters before skidding to a halt on the gravel walk below. A low grunt rumbled in my throat.
