Night Signal
The prism beam faded as the sun dropped below the skyline. Total darkness followed, blinding the perimeter. I needed an active signal. Resting beside the notepad was a dormant LED keychain, its metallic switch recessed into the plastic casing. I positioned my boot squarely over the toggle and pressed downward with full weight. A crisp white beam snapped awake, firing through the heavy glass paperweight. The curved sphere caught the artificial glow and split it into wide, cool arcs across the wooden sill and the dark glass panes. Visibility restored. Nothing moves unnoticed.
