A Doorway Breeze
I walked back out into the building hallway, slipping past the entrance mat and down the quiet stairs. Near the ground landing, a tall potted ficus caught my eye. Right beside its terra-cotta base, the building's shared glass door stood propped open a crack with a heavy brass doorstop. Kneeling on the polished stone floor, I peered through the opening. A refreshing gust carried the scent of wet grass and distant street sounds right into my face. A glossy green privet leaf had drifted across the stone threshold. I caught it by the stem and tucked it upright against the polished brass weight, marking the courtyard entrance for later.
