A Quiet Countermove
The rattling wooden tram brought me south to the central promenade. Beneath the dappled shade of plane trees, an outdoor stone table held an abandoned game of chess, half-finished and tangled in a reckless standoff. Stepping onto the cool, slate-inlaid grid, I surveyed the carved wooden pieces towering around me. Someone had left the black queen hopelessly compromised. Without rushing, I braced my gloved palms against the flank of a polished boxwood knight, guiding its felted base two squares forward and one to the left. The piece settled into place with a muted click, cleanly deflecting the threat. An elegant balance restored.
