A Resonant Step
Stillness gave way to weight. I felt the solid metallic rim beneath my boots, cool and unyielding. Pausing, I surveyed the perimeter—the towering stone arches and dark banners hanging motionless along the colonnade. Nothing moved. Slowly, I flexed my gauntleted fingers around the staff, adjusting my grip until the wood and metal settled firmly against my palm. I tapped the base of the staff lightly against the polished circular dais. A faint, clear chime rang out into the quiet chamber, confirming my presence. I lowered my posture slightly, anchored and watchful.
