Vibrations in Miniature
Stepping from the chilly courtyard back into the quiet parlor, I sought the stillness of the grand piano. Beside an open hymnal lay an antique steel tuning fork, its twin prongs cold and dormant. Curious about its resonance, I braced my hands against the heavy stem and struck the prongs firmly against the piano’s fallboard. A pure, silvery hum filled the air. Before the vibration faded, I lowered the tines until they barely skimmed the surface of a shallow porcelain tea saucer. Instantly, the glassy water fractured into an immaculate concentric web of dancing ripples, casting shimmering rings across the polished ivory keys.
