A Silent Standoff in the Dark
I crossed the damp grass with heavy, uninterrupted strides toward the open door of the backyard tool shed. Inside the darkness, a half-spooled roll of thick wire rested upright on a wooden crate. I stopped at the wooden threshold and stood completely still, fixing my gaze on the dull metallic coils. Slowly, I reached out and rested the cold serrated edge of my saw directly against the stiff wire. With a forceful downward press, I nudged the heavy spool until it tipped flat onto its side, settling in the shadows.
