I came back inside the archive room as night deepened, seeking the quiet shelter of the ancient stone. On the corner of a long wooden reading bench, an old brass drafting stylus lay trapped under a stack of stiff starchart folios. The metal tip was pressed tight against a curled vellum margin, bending the brittle fiber. Bracing my black boots against the cedar floorboards, I leaned forward with measured calm, easing the heavy parchment rolls upward just enough to slide the cold stylus free. As I laid the tool flat in its carved groove, the vellum relaxed into place, restoring gentle harmony to the dim study.
