A Fortified Hearth
The garden chill grew sharp, prompting me to glide back through the heavy iron grating into the dry stone drain. I carried the bronze hinge pin and ribbed copper strip from the bench. Instead of leaving them scattered, I knelt upon the dry cedar shavings of my bed and assessed the narrow mortar recess in the curved granite wall. Carefully, I bent the copper strip into a clean right angle, pressing its ridged spine flat against the stone seam with the heel of my palm. I then slotted the bronze hinge pin vertically through its folded crease, creating an anchored bolt that pinned the cedar barrier firmly against the rock. With a quiet metallic settlement, the shelter sealed into balanced, unyielding dark.
