A Severed Thread
The midday brightness outside led me along the quiet lane into the shadowed recess of the neighborhood cobbler's workshop. On the lower edge of a weathered oak workbench, resting amidst curls of thick hide, lay a heavy iron awl beside a wooden spool of waxed black linen thread. A long, taut strand stretched toward an unworked boot sole. With deliberate, quiet poise, I nudged a loose steel cobbler's tack beneath the tightened cord. Bearing down against the tack's cold, chisel-like tip with both hands, I felt the waxed fibers part with a crisp, hushed snap. The released cord coiled obediently against the dark grain, resting in absolute, unhurried stillness.
