Besties, Pooh and Piglet
*The Log They Share*
The woods were quiet that afternoon, the kind of quiet that only happens when the sunlight comes in patches and the trees are too busy listening to rustle.
On the mossy log sat two best friends. The bear, golden and round with a well worn red shirt, had a habit of thinking deep thoughts very slowly. The piglet, smaller, pink, and wearing his favorite green striped sweater, had a habit of worrying that he was taking up too much space in the world.
They didn’t say much at first. Best friends don’t always need to. The bear simply reached out and rested his arm across the piglet’s shoulders. The piglet, after a moment, scooted a half inch closer.
“Do you ever think,” the piglet asked, his voice barely louder than the moss growing, “that maybe I’m not very good at being brave?”
The bear considered this. He scrunched his stitched nose, which is what he did when a thought was especially important. “I think,” he said at last, “that being brave and being my friend are two different things. And you’re very good at being my friend.”
The piglet looked down at his corduroy feet. “But what if one day I’m not? What if I get too scared and I go away?”
The bear hummed. It was a warm, honeyed sort of sound. “Then I’d sit here on our log,” he said, “and I’d wait. Because logs are good for waiting. And friends are good for staying.”
The piglet thought about that. The idea of someone waiting, not because they had to, but because they wanted to, made his small chest feel less small.
“Promise?” he whispered.
The bear didn’t answer with words. He just squeezed the piglet’s shoulder, just a little. And the piglet knew that was better than any promise.
They stayed there until the sun slanted gold through the watercolor trees. They didn’t go on an adventure. They didn’t solve any problems. They just sat, side by side, on their log.
And in that wood, on that day, it was enough. Because some friendships aren’t measured in miles or minutes or big, brave deeds. They’re measured in how safe the world feels when someone stays.
