Rock ‘N Roll’s Budo Story
“What can I say about ol’ Jesso? When he joined the Joes he came over from Japan. You should have saw all the luggage he brought with him! I kidded with Breaker that tax payers payed for all of it. Once we got Jesso on a mission and all kitted up, I started busting his chops some. I am a “button pusher”, so I started calling him “Captain Japan” making sure he heard me. To his credit, he made nothing of it.
So, there we were later, in the thick it fighting Cobra goons and at some point, they gained the upper hand. Me, Breaker, Footloose, and Jesso were A-squad. We had another B-squad who were not far away but it would take’em some time to get to us. The Cobras had us dead to rights. Breaker, Footloose and I dropped our primaries. Now the thing you learn about Samurai is that they don’t like being captured alive, and don’t you even dare try to take their swords.
When the Cobra punks got a good look at Jesso in full-kit, they didn’t know what to make of him. They started to smile and lowered their guard around him. In a lightning flash, Jesso drew his sword and everyone stopped smiling after the first Cobra was cut down. Sure they had guns and all, but they were not ready for what was coming for them. Jesso moved from one Cobra to the next, yelling something in Japanese while he cut them down. It must have been terrifying to see someone that skilled, wearing that armor, wielding a sword , yelling in Japanese and knowing your time on this Earth is about to end.
When he was done, he looked over his shoulder and just gave me a look. It was one of those heavy moments where you don’t need to say anything.
And later, on our way back to The P.I.T.T., he told me that back in his old Unit in Japan, his nickname was “Budo”. So now I call him Jessie. But it’s with the upmost respect.”
